ARRIVE BY ROAD
Bhutan has four official road entry points from India: Samtse and Phuntsholing in the West, Gelephu in the center, and Samdrup Jongkhar in the East.
The nearest airport to Phuntsholing is Bagdogra in West Bengal, about a 4-hour drive. Phuntsholing is a convenient entry and exit point for exploring Bhutan, Sikkim, and West Bengal (India).
The closest airport to Gelephu is Bagdogra in West Bengal, about a 6-hour drive. Gelephu is a key entry and exit point for exploring Bhutan and the Indian states of Sikkim, West Bengal, Assam, and the North-Eastern regions.
The nearest airport to Samdrup Jongkhar is in Guwahati, Assam, about a 3-hour drive. Samdrup Jongkhar is a convenient entry and exit point for visiting Bhutan, Assam, and other North-Eastern regions of India.
Four airports connect Bhutan’s regions: Yonphula in the East, Bumthang (central and Gelephu (South) domestically, and Paro internationally. Bhutan’s unique landscape can cause unreliable flight schedules, with Yonphula particularly affected by unpredictable summer weather, leading to potential delays or cancellations.
On domestic flights, the baggage allowance is 30kg for business class and 20kg for economy class. International travelers should carry passports valid for at least six months.
Druk Air Helicopter Service, initially for medical evacuations, is now available for private hire, including heli-hiking and other guest services. It offers a faster travel option and scenic aerial views of Bhutan, operating only in clear, calm weather.
