Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. En route, stop at Tamchog Temple to view an iron bridge, and then visit Dobji Dzong, a 17th-century fortress. Enjoy Bhutanese cuisine before exploring the town and craft market. In the evening, visit Thimphu Dzong to photograph its stunning architecture illuminated at night. Overnight in Thimphu.
Today, drive to Kunselphodrang Nature Park to see the massive Buddha Dordenma statue and enjoy panoramic views of Thimphu Valley. Hike around the park and visit Changangkha Temple, the oldest in Thimphu, built in the 12th century. Explore a painting school where traditional arts are taught, then stroll through the Centenary Farmers Market in the evening for vibrant photos of local goods and farmers. Overnight in Thimphu.
Drive to Punakha, the former capital, with a stop at Dochula Pass (3,100m) for panoramic Himalayan views and 108 stupas. On arrival, visit Chimi Lhakhang, a 20-minute walk through terraced fields, known for its blessings for couples. Explore Punakha Dzong, built in 1637, and admire its medieval architecture. Walk the longest suspension bridge in Bhutan for stunning views of the dzong and surrounding villages, or opt for white-water rafting on the Mo Chhu River. Overnight in Punakha.
In the morning, visit Sangchen Dorji Lhundrup Nunnery on a ridge overlooking Punakha and Bajo valleys. Drive through scenic Punatsangchu and Dangchu valleys to Phobjikha, a hotspot for black-necked cranes and other Himalayan wildlife. Visit the Crane Information Center to learn about these birds through a documentary. Capture the valley’s beauty in the evening. Overnight in Phobjikha Valley.
Today, drive back to Paro Valley. Upon arrival, explore top photographic spots for scenic views of the landscapes. Visit the National Museum of Bhutan for insights and enjoy the views of Paro town and the river below the fortress. In the evening, head to Nyameyzampa Bridge for stunning night views of the dzong illuminated with colorful lights.
Drive to Chele La Pass (3988m) through mixed forests. Hike the Sky Burial Trail to 4200m for views of Mt. Jomolhari and Jowo Drakye, and see blue poppies. Descend through rhododendron forest to Kila Gompa Nunnery. En route, stop at Bondey Village for views of Dzongdrakha Temple and wildlife sightings. Finally, explore the Phuba Mandala Display Center, where sand mandalas are created, showcasing Buddhist cultural and philosophical themes. (Overnight in Paro)
In the morning, hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery, a stunning cliffside temple in northern Paro. Believed to be where Guru Padmasambhava meditated, it’s a must-see for photography and trekking enthusiasts. In the evening, visit a farmhouse to experience archery and a traditional hot-stone bath. Heated stones are placed in a wooden tub, releasing minerals to soothe your muscles and joints. Overnight in Paro.
