On a clear day, the flight to Paro offers breathtaking views of Himalayan peaks like Everest and Kanchenjunga. Descending into Paro Valley reveals a unique airstrip surrounded by rice fields and villages. After landing, present your Visa Approval Letter and Passport at immigration, then meet your guide. Transfer to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital, and check into your hotel. If time permits, visit Trashichhoe Dzong to see the throne room, government offices, and, on weekdays, the flag hoisting and guard march.

Today’s visit starts with the Buddha Dordenma Statue, a towering 51.5-meter figure offering sweeping views over Thimphu. Next, hike the Kuenselphodrang Nature Park Trail, a 1 to 1.5-hour trek through blue pine forests with scenic vistas of Thimphu Valley and Changangkha Temple. At the Memorial Chorten, completed in 1974, observe the bustling activity as locals circumambulate, pray, and socialize. Then, visit the Gagyel Lhundrup Weaving Centre, where Mr. Kesang creates intricate textiles, including ceremonial robes for Bhutanese royals. Finally, explore the Royal Takin Reserve Centre, a short drive from Thimphu, where the national animal, the Takin, roams in a lush, fenced area. In the evening, take a stroll along Thimphu’s main street. (Overnight at Hotel in Thimphu)

After breakfast, drive across Dochu-la Pass (3,088m), where a large Bhutanese stupa, 108 smaller stupas, and prayer flags adorn the summit. On clear days, enjoy breathtaking views of the Eastern Himalayas. Descend to the village of Lobeysa/Mitsina and visit Chhimi Lhakhang, a 30-40 minute walk through fields and village, dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kuenley, known for blessing those with fertility issues. Punakha, once Bhutan’s capital, is in a warm, sub-tropical valley. Explore Punakha Dzong, built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, which has been fully restored after damage from fires and an earthquake. (Overnight at Hotel in Punakha)

This morning, drive to Paro, crossing Dochula Pass again. Check in at your hotel and, after lunch, head to the National Museum at the North end of the valley. The museum features Bhutanese art, artifacts, weapons, coins, stamps, and natural history exhibits. Next, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most sacred shrines, originally built in the 7th century by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo, with a second temple added in 1968. In the evening, visit a traditional farmhouse to interact with a local family and learn about their lifestyle. Finally, explore the Phuba Mandala Display Center, where sand mandalas are created, showcasing Buddhist cultural and philosophical themes. (Overnight in Paro)

In the morning, drive to Sang Choekor Lhakang to visit and receive a blessing for a successful trek from the monks. Begin your trek with a hike through a forestry ridge, enjoying Bhutan’s pristine nature. After about two hours, reach Chhoe Tse Temple, offering stunning views of Paro and the Do Chhu valley. Following a hearty packed lunch, continue with a gradual hike through ruins and prayer flags, then into the forest. An hour later, an open meadow with chortens and prayer flags marks the approach to Bumdra Monastery. The monastery and its surroundings are renowned for their breathtaking beauty, best appreciated in person. (Overnight at deluxe camp- Bumdra)

After spending the night, trek back to Paro along a gentle slope leading to Taktsang Monastery, or Tiger’s Nest. This revered site, where Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated after arriving on a tigress, was restored after fire damage in 1998. Many Bhutanese undertake this trek with family and friends during holidays, creating unforgettable memories around campfires despite the cold. For a touch of local lore, ask about Bhutan’s ghost stories. The true essence of the trek is best experienced firsthand. (Overnight at Hotel in Paro)
