On a clear day, the flight into Paro is stunning, offering views of major Himalayan peaks like Everest and Kanchenjunga. The approach takes you through a narrow mountain valley, past close-knit villages, before revealing the open Paro Valley with its rice fields and airstrip. Paro airport is notable for its altitude relative to the runway length, requiring specially trained pilots. Upon arrival, you’ll clear immigration and meet your guide at the airport. After transferring to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital, you’ll check into your hotel and may visit Trashichhoe Dzong, a fortress that houses the King’s throne room and government offices.
Today’s highlights include visiting the 51.5-meter Buddha Dordenma statue for panoramic views of Thimphu, hiking the Kuenselphodrang Nature Park Trail through pine forests, and exploring the vibrant Memorial Chorten. You’ll also visit the Gagyel Lhundrup Weaving Centre, known for its unique textiles, and the Royal Takin Reserve Centre to see Bhutan’s national animal. The day concludes with a stroll along Thimphu’s main street. (Overnight in Thimphu)
After breakfast, drive over Dochu-la Pass (3,088m), where you can enjoy stunning views of the Eastern Himalayas on clear days. Descend to Lobeysa/Mitsina and walk 30-40 minutes through a village and paddy fields to visit Chhimi Lhakhang, a temple dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kuenley, known for helping women with fertility issues. Continue to Punakha, a sub-tropical valley that was Bhutan’s capital until 1955. Explore the Punakha Dzong, a historic fortress built in 1637, recently restored after damage from fires and an earthquake. (Overnight in Punakha)
This morning, travel to Paro, crossing Dochula Pass again. Upon arrival, check in at the hotel. After lunch, head to the National Museum at the northern end of the valley, which houses ancient Bhutanese art, artifacts, weapons, coins, stamps, and natural history exhibits. Visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most sacred shrines, built in the 7th century by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. A second temple was added in 1968 by Queen Mother Ashi Kesang. Finally, explore the Phuba Mandala Display Center, where sand mandalas are created, showcasing Buddhist cultural and philosophical themes. (Overnight in Paro)
In the morning, visit Taktsang Monastery, also known as Tiger’s Nest, where Guru Rinpoche is said to have arrived on the back of a tigress and meditated. Although the main structure was damaged by fire in 1998, it has been meticulously restored. In the evening, visit a traditional farmhouse to experience local life and interact with a Bhutanese family. Spend the rest of the day at your leisure. (Overnight at Hotel in Paro)
